Abatement Technologies builds several vent sanitizing product lines, and the part you need depends on which series is mounted to your plenum (the main distribution box, usually sheet metal, sitting on top of your furnace).

The CAP600-UV is the unit we see most often in Parker homes built between 2015 and 2020, particularly in the Canterberry and Idyllwilde subdivisions where builders spec’d them as add-ons during new construction. It uses a 16-inch T5 UV-C lamp with a 4-pin single-end base. The older CAP300 series takes a shorter 12-inch lamp and has a separate magnetic ballast rather than the electronic ballast found in the 600 series. The CAP600-UV also added a quartz sleeve around the lamp, which the CAP300 lacked. That sleeve cracks more often than people expect, especially if the furnace blower cycles hard during Parker’s dry winter heating season.

• The UV indicator light is out or flickering. The blue glow you could see through the viewport is gone, which usually means the lamp has reached end-of-life or the ballast failed. Lamps degrade slowly, so by the time the light goes fully dark, the unit has been running below effective output for weeks.
• Musty or sour smells return within days of duct cleaning. The UV-C spectrum at 254 nanometers is what suppresses microbial growth on the coil and in the drain pan. When output drops, that biological load rebounds fast, especially in Parker’s variable spring humidity when cottonwood fluff and pollen load the system.
• Visible dust accumulation on the coil despite recent service. A working UV lamp reduces the biofilm that traps particulate. If the coil is dirty again inside two months, the lamp is likely not producing enough intensity.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one thing a homeowner can safely check: the viewport on the side of the CAP600 housing. If it’s dark when the blower is running, the lamp is likely failed. Do not remove the access cover yourself. The 120V ballast is live whenever the furnace is powered, and the quartz sleeve, if cracked, can release mercury vapor from a spent lamp. We’ve also found units where a previous owner wired the UV to constant-hot rather than blower-interlocked, which creates an energized condition you cannot assume is safe.

What we do: pull the plug at the disconnect, verify zero energy with a meter, remove and inspect the sleeve under task lighting, and meter the actual UV output at 6 inches with a calibrated radiometer.
